TMJ Disorders

TMJ Disorders refer to symptoms related to the temporo mandibular joint. These may include difficulty in opening the mouth, clicking noise when opening and closing, headaches, neckaches, migraine. In severe cases patients find everyday life to be a chore. TMJ disorders are caused usually by nerve compression at the TMJ, this can be due to loss of occlusal dimension due to tooth wear, unusual tooth grinding habit, loss of posterior teeth, occusal interference caused by poor dental work. Treatment usually involves wearing a splint to take the stress off the TMJ, followed by rebuilding the bite to a position that does not cause any nerve compression. TMJ disorders is complex science. We need investigations to be carried out before an appropriate device can be prescribed to you.
